NURSING BOARD EXAM RESULT (DECEMBER 2010): SOME THOUGHTS BEFORE THE RESULT

Florence Nightingale, pioneer of modern nursin...                                 Image via WikipediaMore or less than a hundred thousand examinees are monitoring the outcome of the December 2010 Nursing Board Exam in the Philippines. The result is expected to come out late February or early March this year, 2011. While you are waiting for the exam think about the following points.

What if I passed the exam what's next?

Majority of Nursing Board Examinees wanted to work abroad for a better salary. Are you one of those? If yes, then try to think of steps you ought to take or start to take NOW to reach that goal. Sadly, the landscape of nursing job accross the globe has changed through the years. As the number of professional nurses increases (at an astounding rate), the supply is almost is catching up with the demand.

With the decrease in demand and continues surge in supply, the requirements for finding a job that fits Nursing profession has become stricter than ever. That's true with the local hospitals and clinics and even more for job outside the Philippines.

Think about the skills you need to have in order to stand out of the stiff competition. What certifications do I need to have and what are my plans to get those? Waiting for the result and not moving can be a waste of precious time.

What if I FAILED the NLE last December 2010?

The truth is, only 30-40% passes every nursing board exams in the recent years? Last year for instance, only 37, 527 out of 94,462 (40%) passed the November 2009 Nursing Board Exam. What will happen to the 37, 527 newly licensed nurses is not yet certain, in general. And how much more about those remaining 56, 935 who failed? What is your contingency plan if the result is not favorable? Will you retake in the next phase of Nursing Board Exam, probably June 2011? How about budget considerations?

Thinking about these points may be worthwhile and is a useful way of utilizing the idle time nursing examinees are having while waiting for the result.

Job for Nurses: Registration is Now Open for RN Heals Program

Department of Labor and Employment (Philippines)Image via WikipediaThe number of unemployed registered nurses increases every year. With more than 70,000 thousand registered nurses produced each year, not to mention the more than hundred thousand examinees who fails the board exam, the employment rate gets lower and lower each year as the supply overwhelms the demand.

Although most of the nurses that stay in the Philippines only wants to gain the necessary experience to go abroad, the scarcity of job vacancies in the local hospitals and clinics prevents them from going out of the country. Also, with the ever increasing supply amid the decreasing demand, the nurses are prone to abuse by offering below-minimum wages even in well known private and public hospitals.

To help address these issues, the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) in cooperation with Department of Health, Department of Social Welfare & Development (DSWD), Philippine Regulations Commission-Board of Nursing, and the Philippine Nursing Association (PNA) launched a program to help local registered nurses gain the necessary experience. The program is called RN HEALS, an acronym for Registered Nurses for Health Enhancement and Local Service.

The program aims to train and deploy 10,000 nurses in poor rural areas in the country this year. This will address both the scarcity of nursing service in the rural areas and the oversupply of nurses in the urban areas.

Requirements and Registration

Those registered nurses who are physically and mentally fit and are willing to serve in rural communities are encouraged to apply online at http://www.nars.dole.gov.ph/. Registration began last January 17 and is only until January 4, 2011. The list of qualified applicants will be posted at DOLE's website February 7-10, 2011.

Qualified applicants will undergo training according to the requirements of the program. After finishing the required trainings, they will receive a certificate of competency from DOH, DSWD, and PRC.

Compensation and Benefits

The Department of Health (DOH) will provide 8000 pesos monthly allowance while the local government will provide a decent board and lodging and ensure the security of the nurses. The local government is also urged to provide additional allowance of at least 2000 pesos per month. Moreover, PhilHealth and GSIS will provide group insurance for the nurses.
